First Base
Damn these are good. I haven't really got into all those new garagey bands from North America so very much (I'm very sorry, but I do really like indiepop) but First Base are much more poppy and just my cup of tea. The Ramones with shorter songs. And a Casio keyboard. And without leather and a guitarist with horrible right-wing views.
I'd post a link but I don't know one... anybody?

Re: First Base
Thanks Andy! I did have a Google for it this time but it turned up nothing.
Well, not nothing. There were lots of pages about baseball. And kissing.

Re: First Base
there's a really interesting little scene around lafayette, indiana -- first base are from toronto, but their tape & 7" were put out by pizza party which is based in lafayette & run by members of the romance novels. then eric from the romance novels has eric & the happy thoughts (for me they're the best of the lot) and the cave weddings. and also in lafayette are the sweet sixteens and the boy toys and no doubt tons more. i think it's one of these scenes where the same fifteen people are in all the bands, but there's a whole load of good stuff.
but anyway, yeah, first base are pretty excellent.

Re: First Base
Heh, sounds like every indiepop scene ever. There are some nice bands there but First Base are the loveliest for me too. It's all pop-pop-pop-dum-pop! It's just *easy* with them. There's a song they've got on the site called 'Get A Taste of Your Love Again' that I hadn't heard before and it's brilliant.everard wrote: i think it's one of these scenes where the same fifteen people are in all the bands

Re: First Base
Ooh, last.fm has picked up on the indiepop First Base now and the image of their single cover appears when you play them.
I'm secretly disappointed although I did upload that image. I'd grown to like the Malaysian Toni Basil lookalike.

Re: First Base
the tape & 7" are well worth getting but if anyone wants a bunch of mp3s of the first base myspace stuff, send me a pm ...

Re: First Base
I've been going all nutty to that personal and the pizzas cover of 'nobody makes my girl cry but me'
I love the tough guy intro where they give 'moo-chacho grassy-ass' to first base
unless 'nobody' is a p & the p's song and first base covered it and p & the p's are giving them props- I know so little about either band- I kind of like that I don't
makes them mysterious, sexy even

Re: First Base
"nobody" is definitely a first base original. haven't heard personal's cover yet because i ordered that particular 7" from tic tac totally, and ttt is either crazy fast or super slow to send out orders ... this time round it's the latter.
all i really know is that first base is from toronto (but everyone thinks he's from lafayette) and that personal & the pizzas are from the bay area (but their schtick is that they're a new jersey band).
personal & the pizzas are great. even "pepperoni pie", the jingle they did in the gatti's pizza competition (which unfortunately doesn't seem to be playable online anymore) is better than most bands could come up with. i hope it's on the anthology tape that burger are going to put out.

Ooooooooooooooh!
Will there be a way of buying it in the UK without spending ££££££££s on postage...?

Re: First Base
I've had real problems getting their first record...I ordered and paid for it in December from their US label, but have had nothing and received no replies to my e-mails chasing up about it. Anyone else have similar problems?

Re: First Base
It took them at least a couple of months to send mine out.philjunebride wrote:I've had real problems getting their first record...I ordered and paid for it in December from their US label, but have had nothing and received no replies to my e-mails chasing up about it. That new cover is bloody lovely!
Re: First Base
not sure. ho distro or sncl or italian beach babes might get it in. or rough trade, of course. but if you definitely want it i'd suggest ordering direct now rather than taking the chance.humblebee wrote:Will there be a way of buying it in the UK without spending ££££££££s on postage...?
i personally had an irritating but ultimately okay experience with pizza party -- the record was sent out a month after they'd announced all preorders were in the mail, plus it arrived without the s/t first base tape i'd also ordered (albeit with a different first base tape, a free gift for preorderers). but i did get a reply to my second email (they claimed they'd sent the tape separately, even though that would have cost them more) & they sent a 'replacement' tape pretty swiftly. however, you're not alone -- i've read a number of complaints (e.g. here & here).philjunebride wrote:I've had real problems getting their first record...I ordered and paid for it in December from their US label, but have had nothing and received no replies to my e-mails chasing up about it. it's kind of a strange label cos i know they have at least one subsequent release that never made it to the webshop even though it's highly unlikely to have sold out. they've put out great stuff but seem flaky for sure.
in other news: eric & the happy thoughts lp forthcoming on hozac. woo-hoo!

Re: First Base
No. Don't go there. I ordered and paid for records from these. Nothing received and no replies to e-mails.
Re: First Base
sorry to reopen an old wound! surely the problem was with pizza party, though, who did the s/t tape & first 7"? doubt first base (or anyone else) will be in a hurry to put anything out with them again. i don't think the band is jinxed, there didn't seem to be a problem with the second 7". this third one is on a new label run by the person who did the artwork for the other releases.

Re: First Base
OK! Sorry about that. Still annoyed at $17.50 stolen from me by Richard Crossland of pizza party records....(I bear more grudges

Re: First Base
any of the few first base fans on here use facebook? if so, i'd really appreciate if someone could drop a message to hosehead asking them for their email address (or even better, that plus a total including airmail to the uk for the first base tape they just put out). please. thank you. i really hope labels aren't going to start using facebook as their sites, though if they were to post contact info it wouldn't be quite so annoying.
