You know, generally I don't mind very much if bands I love (or like; or even adore) split up because such is life and there'll always be songs and memories and stories.

But.

But.

Not The Lucksmiths!

I'm seriously going to find out if there is a way, somehow, to take a train or a plane or even a bicycle and see them one more time.

I think it's quite good they've split, really. In a way. You could tell on the last album that maybe it was coming to an end.

And we still have The Guild League!

I don't know. I still really liked it. And more than any other band I know, they have really grown up with getting older as a band. I could just imagine them being in their 50s and writing songs about teenage children. Or something like that.

oh well, at least it's not the kind of sudden split where forthcoming shows get cancelled. it'll make the scala & glasgow gigs seem like much more of an event.

I don't think Glasgow is confirmed yet but I'm making enquiries about putting them on here.

glasgow is on their website, but venue tbc. have just been texting friends to tell them to hurry up & buy scala tickets. i think there will be a minor rush on 'em. also it's bound to get a write-up in tnt or whatever that free expat/ visitor mag is called, so there'll be a whole load of the kids who turn up in force whenever a popular-ish australian band plays.

would be nice if there were some low-key uk show on tues 7th july.

Official statement's up now:
May 2009

A sad message to all our friends

Dear Friends,

There's no easy way to put this, so please accept our apologies for the seemingly abrupt nature of this post. We are saddened to announce that after sixteen years as The Lucksmiths, the band has decided to break up.

The last few years have been an uphill battle in many ways, so this isn't a hasty decision based on any falling-out between band members, but rather, an acceptance of the inevitable. This decision was finally reached a few months back, so we've had plenty of time to let it sink in.

We had tried to operate the band in a way that would suit all of us, but at the same time we've been very conscious that too much compromise would in the end affect our creative output. We're very proud of the music we make, and we certainly didn't want it to start stinking. So, in taking our cues from Devo, we've decided to whip the proverbial cream before it sits out too long.

We're really excited about our upcoming European tour, and have booked some Australian dates for our "farewell tour" in August. The details for these shows are in our gig guide. We really hope to see as many people at these shows as possible, as we will be playing super long sets, cramming in as many old favourites as possible.

We must apologise for not making it back to the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand or Singapore, or to the other amazing European countries we've previously visited — and for never having made it to the other fifty or so countries we'd hoped to tour one day.

We really want to thank you all, especially the wonderful people who've helped us out in any way, and anyone who's listened to our music or come to a show. We've loved having you in our world and we will miss you dearly.

xo The Lucksmiths

Wow, it's really sinking in now seeing that personal message. I'm glad I'm in the UK or I'd be distraught!

Just got the email. Nooooo. I wonder (and hope) Marty will continue with some other project.

For what it's worth, I think 'California In Popular Song' was they most beautiful thing they ever did.

I'm truly truly gutted. I love everything they've done and I thought the latest was one of their best. It is a band who I wanted to always be around but sadly they wont :-(

Can I just add that, as their record label, they were an absolute fucking delight to work with and some of the nicest people you will ever meet in your life. I'm very sad to see them go, but very proud to have released their records.

Is anyone else going to the Berlin show? It's the only one we can make and we have to go and see them somehow. And spending some days in Berlin is not a bad thing either. But we do need to buy ourselves tickets for the game of course.

And now off to that other thread and ask about places to stay.

Do you know Anders? He was saying the other day he might go to the Berlin show.

Hee! I only know him virtually from Anorak, but it'd be lovely to meet him in real life!

Note to self: don't post in a music thread right after reading the football thread. Tickets to the game, ts ts.

I imagine Jens, who used to post on bowlie as Lars Frodo, will also be there. Were you on bowlie? I can't remember now.
