In my effort to find this thread, I got this message:
The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: green pete.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.
Martijn thought this amusing enough to post.

But anyway, onto the REAL, EXCITING reason for this post, which is that I have just discovered I probably saw the Regulars live once upon a time and I didn't even know it! I was reading Pete's interview in 'A layer of chips' fanzine and I realised that he lived in Birmingham at the time I visited it and saw Tender Trap play -- so I went over to the Tender Trap website to check the date and ask him if he'd been there, and it says that Tender Trap played with Saloon (which I remember) and THE REGULARS! Oh my, I'm so excited. Not quite sure why but never mind that!

Heee, that was a great night! And a good thing that I got to play on that bill, cos it was only a couple of months before we split up.

I don't remember much, except a) I was impressed by someone's haircut, b) someone made some funny jokes, and c) it was someone's granny's birthday, and he had to buy her a present, or go to her party, or both. Although there's a small chance any one of those had to do with another band.

Oh, and funnily enough, the only reason I was at that gig is that a Greek boy, who turned out to be friends with Christos and Marianthi, told me to go. (I thought he was dead cute, and so I did go.) It's a small world!

Heee! Aww! It's so amazing that you were there.

(c) was our bass player, Rich. (a) and (b) would quite clearly have been me.

I am ridiculously excited about it. No, it doesn't quite make sense, but it makes me happy, so whatever.

And yes, I thought it must have been you with the jokes and the haircut.

Yagos. I was young. And slightly silly. It's a cool story, although there's not much to it. I'm quite sure I've told it to Christos, in Battersea station probably. Or Denmark Hill station. Or the bit in between, I can't remember. (Don't you love Anorak, people don't mind if you go on a tangent about stations!)

I thought it might have been Yagos. You'll have to tell me the story too, at Herne Hill station.

All this talk had made me wonder if I had heard of the Regulars, back when the sole purpose of my life seemed to be to discover five new indiepop bands a week. I probably hadn't; you didn't get any mention in Think Small back when it was a fanzine. Such a shame. You should have sent me an email back in 1998 (which was before I started the website), for I really believed indiepop was something people on this side of the pond didn't really care about.

Why isn't Pete Green bigger than the Beatles? Seriously, i've had that PG Cd that comes with A Layer of Chips on all week, and I fail to see why Pete isn't being talked about in the same breath as the greats. In terms of indiepop, he is topping the pile for me at the moment.
It is no coincidence

The obvious solution here is that Pete should go on X Factor next year.

Friends, Romans, Anoraks. As some of you already know, I used to be in a band called The Regulars. Most of you will never have heard The Regulars. But some of you might like to. So I am rereleasing The Regulars' posthumous compilation album Effortless as an mp3 blog.

The first track, 'This is the Sound', is up now.

http://www.sparklemotion.co.uk/effortless" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Those few of you who own the album might still be interested in the blog as well, cos I'm writing new stuff about every song as I upload it.

Do please have a listen and a read and, if it pleases you, subscribe to the blog. I hope you like it.

Thanks!

i thought that the pete green interview in the new layer of chips fanzine was brilliant. without wanting to sound like i want to bum you, it's nice to have literate, clever and funny things said by the people whos music i like. i remember in the dark days inbetween discovering the smiths and waiting for myself to discover indie pop, that i noticed that it made it a lot harder to like the music i listened to when the people who made it were clearly reactionary idiots.

britain's most erudite pop star. you can have that for the press release.

which one of bucks' fizz did you pretend to be then?
When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called 'the People's Stick.'

Sorry for the oversight, Dunc - I've put it right! Ta for the link from the Autumn Store blog too.

Do you know what's happening with The Will to Rally, by the way? I sent an email the other week to try and join their mailing list but it didn't work.

Track 2 is up on the blog now, anyway.

Thanks Pete!

Funnily enough I was listening to them today. They're getting the occasional gig but I've not made it down to any of them recently cos of gig clashes. They're not up to much other than that I don't think - though something at the back of my mind thinks it heard somone talking about an album.
