Rose Melberg (Tiger Trap, Go Sailor, The Softies)

Post by RITH » Wed Apr 23, 2008 21:54

Every now and then I find myself falling in love with Rose Melberg all over again. 'Cast away the clouds' is a near perfect album.

Tonight I was listening to first the Go Sailor EP and then her 'Portola' album, and it made me wonder what she's up to at the moment. Anyone know?

She's lovely, isn't she? I fell in love with her when she was touring here last year. As far as I know she's recently recorded a few songs with Gregory Webster which are going to be released on WYAIWIA - not sure when though.

I'm crazy about pretty much everything she's ever done and 'Windy' by Go Sailor is one of my favouritest songs of all time. I love how her voice fits the punk poppiness of Tiger Trap and the fragility of The Softies just as perfectly.

So did I! When she played Cast Away The Clouds in Oxford I just melted... I've been listening to most of the Softies stuff again lately and I love those songs a lot more than I used to as well.

Last year she played a few songs in the park in Nottingham and it was the greatest thing. Tonieee and Uncle Ants were there too! The quality of the photos is a bit rubbish cos I took them with my phone but, aw:

A private parkconcert, that's amazing. You lucky bastard!
It's amazing how much weight she's lost. She looks great.

Tiger Trap kind of kills me cuz I love them so much. It's my car music for navigating the trecherous, dog-eat-dog roads of Boston. And their name is taken from "Calvin & Hobbes" *flutter*

Rose is my biggest indiepop crush ever - I'm completely in love with her.

The Tiger Trap album and Sour Grass e.p are two of the greatest things I own. I'll never get bored of her voice - or those surf guitar lines. She can really sing! technically speaking I mean - I'm in awe of her voice.

I'm glad I found the Tiger Trap album when I was 15 so I could grow up through Go Sailor and into The Softies. Each one of her bands perfectly complimented where I was in my life - I don't think I could have loved The Softies when I was 15.

Meeting her last year was pretty amazing, I didn't say half the thing I wanted to though which I really regret. I wish the the first time we said hello I wasn't halway through a bite of the biggest beefburger I'd ever eaten too.

She played 'Its Love' for me though and I got to stand there and stare at her for an hour like a starstruck kid.

i know exactly what you mean about her different bands complimenting stages of yr life, altho for me it was discovering go sailor when i must have been about 16, and then developing into tiger trap before only in the last few years really truely appreciating the softies. magical.

she dedicated 'my broken heart' to me, and i got the explanation afterwards about the song, in person and emails on her return. only even then, did i really get what my friend had been singing to me down the phone. tears were shed.

we climbed up onto the roof of my building and watched the meteor shower shower too, theres a lovely photo somewhere ill dig out later on this evening perhaps..

oh yeah, and she crashed in my bed next to me. phwoarr.

Yeah, she knows her way around a heartbreaking lyric or two.

I'll always say 'Words and Smiles' is my favourite all time Rose moment. The youthful enthusiasim, noise and breakneck speed of the version that came out on the Four Letter Word split single is amazing.

Yes! It's the way she sings it, with such uncharacteristic abandon. She lets her voice break like she has no control over it.

Yeah! I love the way the guitars sound like they're about the burst the amps too.

There's a video of them playing Words and Smiles here: http://www.myspace.com/tigertrapband

I saw a video for 'Sour Grass' once with the band at the fun fair I think, I can't find it anymore.

That Cake Shop version of "Each New Day" is mesmerising - every pause, every skip, every "don't you know I hardly".

I've been whistling it tunelessly all week.

So, Anorak's last.fm radio station made me sit up and really notice Tiger Trap for the first time the other day. I love being 15 years behind the times, because now I get to enjoy the album as if it's brand new and I've been enjoying it an awful lot!

the softies might be the best pop band ever. it is so lush, while somehow remaining beautifully sparse. i do not know if there is another project so perfect!

One thing that we've known from the start
Deep down inside, we're punk rockers at heart

Rose Melberg really is one of my musical heroines. I can't write songs or sing for nix, but if I could I'd want to be just like her. Just about everything she has done has either broken my heart or brought a massive smile to my cheeks.

Initially, I really didn't like Go Sailor - I heard "Long Distance" and it just didn't click for me. Then, about six months later, I heard "Ray of Sunshine" and all of a sudden I couldn't get enough of them. It ended up being the album that defined the 19-year-old me - they had a song for every moment of my life. "Fine Day for Sailing" still rates as one of my favourite songs ever. God, I love Go Sailor so much.

I've never been able to get into Gaze, though - I had a copy of 'Mitsumeru' a few years ago but I never really hooked onto it. If somebody can recommend some really good Gaze songs, then I'm willing to give them another go.

Everything is heard by Go Sailor is incredible. Wasn't Paul Curran from Onion Flavoured Rings in them too, or have i made that up...?

Some of my friends have a band called Meow Meow that's really heavily influenced by Go Sailor, Cub and similar stuff: http://www.myspace.com/meowmeowband Check 'em out, they're really good.

(And anyone into punk or thrash may be amused to know that the songwriter/guitarist is Marko from The Down & Outs/SSS)

Ooh, i like that lots. Really nice, you can see the influence there (and i like how Rose is their top friend!)

Recently i've been more than a little obsessed with Go Sailor's 'The Boy who sailed around the world' i can't get enough of that song right now.
and that snare drum, that drum roll
means we've got a winner
