We've been talking today about booking tickets for London > Alfreston on precisely the basis outlined by Brian above.... looks absolutely fine, and no sign on thetrainline.com of the journey being affected by the Nottingham hassles (after all, the route doesn't go via Notts at all, right? It's London > Leicester > Derby > Sheffield).

However, wyvern's post above makes me want to double-check for nasty surprises before putting down the money and saying "hey good news - travel's gonna be easy", so, er, yeah - what's the score, etc?

You'll be completely fine. You could get all the way to Nottingham, but it'd mean catching a bus from East Midlands Parkway, which is hardly a life-changing scenario.

I'm looking forward to when Nottingham station can handle more trains and isn't a badly-lit, poorly-catered for shadow of what it used to be.

personally I'm a bit miffed with wyvern for posting that, nottingham remains accessible by rail (we're not closed off from the outside world just yet) but from east midlands parkway into nottingham, you have to jump on a bus... an incovenience admittedly but not the worst thing in the world... it just needs to be factored in when travelling

travel at peak travel times and you may come a cropper but otherwise it should be ok

if it were me coming from down south I'd travel up on the thursday lunchtime, stop over in nottingham for the t-buns/spook school/big wave/cars can be blue gig that evening, then take a leisurely bus ride to indietracks on the friday afternoon

for travelling back I'd want the path of least resistance, I'm sure, but nottingham is still open to visitors, honest

Thanks for the reassurance guys.

To be honest, I've been unaware of how extensive or, uh, non-extensive the works around Nottingham have been in practice, so just wanted to check in case it was looking like one of those "oh, and by the way, we're randomly dynamiting tracks all over the East Midlands this month, so maybe you'd prefer to go to Milton Keynes instead?" type situations. Glad to hear things are actually pretty ok.

obviously we take no responsibilty for anyone who is left severely traumatised by attempting to get to indietracks via the east midlands rail network

however if the trauma leaves them convinced they are a reincarnated witch burned at the stake many centuries previous who intends to wreak bitter revenge on the surviving ancestors of her tormentors in modern day (seventies) rome and proceeds to kill all the blameless victims off one by one using ever more ingenious and artful methods we may be interested in the film and publishing rights

I hope it doesn't come to that though, not really*

*although...

The bus only adds about 20 mins to the journey. Ok, not pleasant with camp luggage, but no tears.

They are apparently running 400 bus services a day to replace the trains between Parkway and Nottingham. And they've had to put buses on that have been out of service for years and Nottingham is awash with excited bus spotters taking photos. I think it's all quite exciting.

I had to get a replacement bus on my way back from Birmingham on Saturday, between Derby and Nottingham. The air-conditioning was broken and their were loads of roadworks. It was hell.

I have been reliably informed that any bus heading to Nottingham on Thursday will have full air conditioning and free ice lollies.

Don't worry about being miffed. I had two dreadful experiences on the second and third days of the closure. The buses were nice but the drivers hadn't been told where to go and had no maps. Utter chaos. Also it cuts me off from conveniently going home to see my mum. When my body has recovered from Indietracks I can make my own way, but I don't trust myself in case I fall asleep on the road just yet.
The bridge went in a few weeks ago so the closure is incidental. It is to put in a new platform and update the signals. Doncaster managed that years ago with a 2 day closure.

Eeeeeeee!!!

Image

As taken from the BBC News Nottingham website. I've spotted a couple of Dennis Arrows among that little lot already and got slightly damp.

There was a lovely little bit on the local news about how the local train spotters have been bus spotting instead. I think it's lovely and glad that they can make something out of what is a bit of an inconvenience for people to say the least.

The train station in Beeston seems really confused with people getting replacement buses; they don't seem to have expected it as there's loads of bus routes into the city nearby.

Proper postmodern pastime, bus-spotting. As well as not without its dangers. Trainspotters are milquetoasts in comparison.

A few decades ago you'd have seen far more bus-spotters out and about, but many have been discouraged in the last decade or so by aggressive bus station / town centre security banning them or even breaking their cameras, or else by spotters increasingly being mistaken for deviants.

The latter situation particularly arises as school bus services tend to be the preserve of the oldest, longest-lived (and therefore often most intrinsically interesting) double and single deckers, and the potential to misinterpret the actions of an (often) single man or woman pointing a camera or notepad at a vehicle full of minors is clear enough.

Shame, really. It's utterly harmless and gets you out and about a bit.
