how does transferring money with western union work?

Post by cupcake_love » Wed Jan 19, 2011 11:32

will it be sent to a specific address or is the money being "picked up" by an identification code or something?

i was asked to transfer money to the american embassy in london (the address matches), but it kind of seems like some kind of scam. i feel like im being dragged into so many things like this recently, and i am too naive to know what to believe!

I'd be very surprised that an embassy would use Western Union. I'm pretty sure it's a scam.
Money can be picked up in any W.U point with a code... or thanks to a "friend" among WU workers.

Western Union is the favourite method for scammers, basically because anybody can pick up the money with a code of some sort. I don't know why an Embassy would use it but you can always contact them. I'm constantly hearing about people being scammed with non-existent flats and jobs through Western Union. I don't know what happens when someone decides to use it for legal purposes, I wonder if it arises suspicion.

Moreover, Western Union said thousand times to use its service only to send money to people you know. Never use it to buy/pay something or send money to a stranger.

My experience with embassies (and some pretty dodgy central asian ones, Turkmenistan is well up for a big scam and jazz like making all the libraries of gold and naming it after your mother on a Tuesday and forcing her to rotate to face the sun in her grave) is that they'll only accept personal cheques by post and only cash or a card in person. They'll most likely keep you in a pitch black basement in Kensington somewhere while discussing whether they should let you in because you've got toothpaste on your jumper but they'll almost certainly never try and get money out of you with Western Union. Definitely sounds like a scam to me. If in any doubt, phone the US Embassy direct (and cross check the number to be doubley safe) and ask them how to transfer money to them for anything you might need; else avoid WU.
