Intercity Baby ‘09

Hello! I’m going to do a one-off zine in a very short amount of time and I want you to contribute! While cycling home on a quiet evening last week, I was struck by the thought of how important travel and transport is to the indie pop community. So many of us travel great distances, plan our holidays around gigs and festivals, and spend significant time and money on transport to see the people and bands that make us feel so happy and connected.

So I wanted to collect those stories, dreams, and memories into this zine. These are just a few examples to get you started:

*********************************
[*]What’s more romantic (and why!): the journey or the destination?

[*]Tell me about a lovely train or bus station or airport reunion.

[*]What bands or shows have you traveled very far for?

[*]What are some of your favorite pop songs about travel and transport?

[*]What train, bus, or plane journey would you like to take that you haven’t yet? [/b]
*********************************

You can take one of those questions and write a story about it or write something completely of your own imagination relating to transport and indie pop. Or you can simply answer those questions with a few short sentences because I want to have a Chickfactor-style Q&A section.

This may seem train-focused, partly because I think of it as a romanticized mode of transport and such a rich part of the culture in the UK and in many parts of Europe. But for those of us who must get on planes to get to the good times, your thoughts count too! I just bought my first one-way plane ticket which I’ve never done before and that’s certainly inspired this idea as well.

Pictures and art work are certainly welcome too!

I have a strict timeline because I have to get these printed and in the hands of the distributors before I move. Therefore, please send any contributions to me on here or at popchicago @ gmail by Friday, April 3.

Steaming out of Taunton makes me wonder why you have to be so far away;
Weston-Super-Mare just makes me wonder if we’ll ever go there some day…

Hee, that does sound like a lovely idea! I don't have a lot of time (actually I have none of that at all) but if I try hard I might put some words together during some of my train journeys. Through Taunton. And Weston-Super-Mare.

PS I think I've got the email address of the Kensingtons' singer somewhere; let me know if you want it (although you probably have it already).

intercity baby attacked by rats!
a mutant at the age of one, a human rodent cabbage.

Thanks, Martijn! It would be super ace if you could put some words together.

I've been in touch with Stewart Kensingtons already but thank you for the offer. :-)

I would be thrilled if you wrote something, Pete. On your blog you write so lovingly and thoughtfully about your journeys and routes and how integral they are to your life and that is just the sort of thing I am looking for. :-)

What a lovely idea! I'll have a go, Jennifer! Mine are more travelwagon car orientated but I can think of at least on train story which may fit!

You know I adore your writing! If you have a train story to share, ace, but you can also weave a narrative about a travelwagon car journey (because I don't even know what a travelwagon car is and you may see how that could be charming to other people!).

I have spent an inordinate amount of time in airports (delays, delays, delays) over the past few days and it has not exactly been the romantic wanderlust experience that I usually think such journeys are.

Oh, the travelwagon is just my affectionate name for my vehicle!

I've gotten some responses to the questions I posed up there and they are FAB! I can't wait to share them with you all. Still waiting on a few more responses + full-length pieces and then on to layout!

Hello! My zine, Intercity Baby ’09, is now available! It is nicely stocked at 50 pages and the cover looks superb in full color.

Image

The zine is full of romantic reminiscing on journeys – be they by train, car, or airplane – and the wonderful people and pop events that await us on the other end. I cannot fully express how genuine and fascinating the stories are. I really can’t wait for you to read them!

Some of the contributors include Anorak’s own Pete Green, PeteOutcognito, and Martijn! Laz of Bubblegum Lemonade, Jenny of Strawberry Fair, and Charlie of Bears and The Golden Rule also wrote featured pieces.

As stated in the first post of this thread, I posed five questions to a number of international pop luminaries. Some of those who thoughtfully answered these questions are from The Orchids, Summer Cats, Pocketbooks, One Happy Island, Friends, The Foxgloves, Very Truly Yours, and more!

If you’d like to order one, you can PayPal me at popchicago @ gmail. Each copy (including postage) is $5 if you live in the U.S. and $7 if you live anywhere else. Copies will also be available through the luscious Caramel as soon as they receive my parcel.
