February Album Writing Month

Post by tompony » Thu Jan 31, 2008 11:48 am

http://fawm.org/

Has anyone ever tried this before? I think The Chemistry Experiment did it last year, albeit using some older songs rather than trying to write an album of entirely new ones.

I TRIED to do it last year but wrote this many songs: No songs.

I'm going to try to do better this time. Anyone else fancy joining me for a month of enforced creativity?

Teehee!

It's a nice idea but to stand any chance at all I'd need to do this much work for the whole month: No work.

Sounds fun, I'll be up for it.

Its 14 songs, but is there any advice about album length?

I wasn't planning to do any work in February anyway!

I think you're free to write 14 short songs, I wouldn't worry about length. The guidelines are fairly loose, it's just about getting to the end of the month with a bunch of new songs really.

I DID manage to write and record a 12 track, 20 minute album in one day for the Crap Art Album-a-Day project, but the month-long deadline seems much more difficult to get motivated for, somehow.

I did this last year with Andy from Wintergreen. We recorded a weird sort of one 45-minute track album (recorded in my living room with a guitar, a bass, an accordion, a shruti box and a melodica) with different movements and the same motif (motif!) repeated in different ways in different parts. And a pop song at the end. We did a myspace for it (here), where you can hear bits and pieces of it.

It was really good fun. We did everything in one take, which is a million miles away from the bands I used to play with, and I like the honesty of that, being just a document of where you are at some bit of time rather than trying to be something more.

I'd like to do it again this year, doing some quiet Jason Molina-type songs if I can find a drummer to play along. I think it's brilliant for making me actually finish things.
the trouble with personalities, they're too wrapped up in style
it's too personal; they're in love with their own guile

Roadside pOppies did an album for this. It's still available on their site.

I'm IN! I need to write some new songs for my SHOW (darling! show!) anyway AND i've just bought some new recording software AND i've done albums/cassettes in less than 28 days before ANYWAY, so it'd be nice to be able to use the deadline as an excuse if it's no good!

Tom - excellent work! Pete - get IN!

There's no chance on Earth! I've got two new songs on the go right now though, so that counts as extraordinarily prolific by my standards.

Your show sounds ace, Mark. I've been reading those Popart blogs, by the way. The one with the fight is the best. More violence please!

I think I'm going to do it, even if it does mean writing more songs in one go than I've previously written in my life to date. Still, everyone likes a challenge don't they.

Actually, they did the RPM Challenge (http://www.rpmchallenge.com), which is similar but only asks for 10 songs. Waz did it as well, under the pseudonym Chandler D. Obelisk.

Sylvie and I are giving it a go this year. We'll aim for 10 songs in 4 weeks, but I reckon even we fail to do that, it'll at least get us working towards something, and if we only get 3 or 4 good songs up to a rough demo standard it'll still have been a productive month. Wish us luck...

Ah right. I can't actually remember which one I signed up to last year, as my utter failure to produce anything means that there is no trace of me.

Hopefully the fact that a few people on here are up for doing it will help motivate me! I'm not too worried about reaching 14 songs as long as I have something more at the end of the month than I did at the start.

My album is going to be called "The Bricks of the Universe".

I had to stop myself from thinking of Song Ideas on the way home tonight - this is going to be GRATE!

The length of my songs is going to be based on the Fibonacci sequence, that as much planning as I've allowed myself

I've been coming up with ideas for songs and then trying to forget them so as not to cheat! Which is a bit counter-productive.
I think having an album title is OK though... and thinking of CONCEPTS... as long as no actual lyrics or musics are conceived until the first of February.

WE'RE OFF!!

First song now about 3/4 of the way through - choruses, verse 1 & 2 DONE and the IDEA for middle bit/last verse is SORTED. I'm 5% of the way there already!

That doesn't sound much at all, put like that - anybody else started yet?

Still 45 minutes until it starts, according to the FAWM website! I guess we can ignore that in our SUPERIOR time zone though.

I'm stuck at work but will try to jot down some lyrics in my lunch (half-)hour so that I can get stuck in as soon as I get home!

Bah, ignore previous post, that title's already been take by the Clash
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Post_%28album%29

I think I'll go with the slightly more menacing title of "Your Last Post"

Fuck! No, it's nearly 19 hours into February and I've still not started. I'll start tonight. We think we might have found a suitable name last night - it's not cheating to think up a name in January, after all.
