On Wednesday my Rickenbacker arrived.

I was keeping it a secret, hence not writing about it here right away, but tonight I took it along to practice for the first time and the rest of the Nest got to see it.

Playing at a decent level through my amp where we practice, it sounded so much better than it has done on a quiet level in our house, or through headphones.

But yes, she's a 4003 in Fireglo, and I am very happy.
I'm stealing your guitar when you're in Sheffields in a couple of weeks. Just so you know...

Thanks.

I understand there's a queue.

Here's five eighths of the nest last night, including me with my ric...

As for the missing members, there's one just out of shot, one down the road playing a gig at another pub, and one abroad on holiday.

Of which, I am at the front, also that strap is too long, pull that up and your socks along with it.

I can't seem to find a strap that's long enough for me. I need one that's over five feet long but everything in the local Sound Control's too short...

Bless her.

Astrid wants to engage in some quality control first, I think. Did anyone else have their camera out at that gig?

There are some nice long straps in the Beverley Music Centre. The one I have gives me the unused option to play at knee height. Do you want me to pick one up for you? I could pop it in the post or bring it to a gig next month.

There were a fair few people taking photos, I think. Lau had my camera but forgot to actually use it :-)
Bass has to be low-slung btw.

Cheers, I may have to take you up on that. But first I'm gonna try a shop in Chesterfield on Saturday (hangover permitting).

Cool thing.

Actually, I have one I bought the other day, in blue, in the house, though I can't remember what colour your bass is.

fireglo 4003 is what all the best bass players use, nice one johnny.

I got a new extra long strap in germany. Feels amazing.

hooky once quoted paul simenon in an interview saying, "never wear your bass above the bollocks" i don't really want to look like i'm wrestling an alligator onstage, but low slung till its almost out of hands reach is the way to go.

Thanks, I was just having a noodle around in the kitchen while listening to city pull it back. Ace.

I'll have to play Rickenbacker during future games and see if it helps.

Do you have the hipshot bridge gav, or are you keeping it stock?

I did shorten my strap slightly the other day, but it felt all wrong, so I put it back quickly.

Yeah, I'm keeping mine original too.

The other night we played with Fruit Bats, their bassist had a beautiful Ampeg SVT head unit and cab, it was so lovely.

I asked and they let me play through it... really really nice. Mmmm.

I have 3 basses:
- a 1969 Fender Jazz bass. Fantastic. It sounds sweet & strong at the same time, perfect sound from the E to the very high notes.
- a 1977 Rickenbaker 4001. It's a pleasure to play with it, particularly for the left hand. It sounds great on high note, but the low notes sounds kinda "empty"/flat
- A variax - this bass can emulate many different kind of bass, gibson, fender, upright... Very versatile.

I put black nylon strings on the Fender, it doesn't hurt fingers at all & makes a mellower sound.

Now playing: Track 1 – Up On Crutches

Who uses compression for their bass, and what do you use? Are there noise issues? Do you get good tone?

edit: I'm thinking of one of these - http://www.effectpowersupplies.com/ebs- ... 1036-p.asp

I don't really play bass, but my band's bass player is getting bored of it so I'm taking over a bit so he can play more synths. I've borrowed his jaguar bass, it's such a beautiful looking thing but the sound is so underwhelming... i just get a poorly defined mid-rangey kind of tone. If it was a guitar I guess I'd put new strings on it, but bass strings are way pricey.

There's not much point to that paragraph, just sharing my frustrations with it.
