Post by frogblast » Mon Mar 02, 2009 20:27

Sun like honey on the floor,
Warm as the steps by our back door.

I like. But isn't highly coloured/flavoured cereal aimed at kids. And kids can't really appreciate "retro", surely?

When I was young I wanted to be a graphic designer, but my parents taught me that there was no money in anything creative and art was for people who couldn't do maths.

I think the real problem for me is even if this stuff is reprinted to the very exact benday dot of the original packaging it is still a reprint, a facsimile, an archetype, a copy

and that's why 'retro' styling sucks so bad- something that authentically copies is still however closely it copies not an original and the power of something remembered, kept and treasured is in it's authenticity, that not only does this look like something from 1962 (let's say) but it is something from 1962- that's the power, that this is a surviving artefact, that links you directly back to a certain time and place whereas a copy is just that, something that was printed up last month, that has only every existed in this period- the ink will be different, the card, the machine that folds the card... it's a copy and it's empty and meaningful only as a copy

surely these cereal boxes are being marketed for the consumption of adults rather than kids?

Nah James, maths is for people who can't do art. I think it's good to take retro graphics as an inspiration for modern stuff. If you like those cereal boxes there's some nice stuff here on http://grainedit.com/ too.

oh I haven't got a problem with using it as inspiration- forward in all directions and all that- but copying it, presenting it as a straight copy, I feel that's a poor show

it's nothing to do with creativity, it's to do with the very essence of the thing- an original reasonates and is embued with being whereas a copy is an imitation and what it is is what it lacks

that's my beef

i agree with you, but then i thought about what andy warhol did i then i just grew very confused. didn't he essentially produce a stream of facsimiles, stick his name on them and then flog them?
When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called 'the People's Stick.'

Yeah, i agree too linus. Maybe its a bit like hearing a bad cover version of a song you like or something.

Yeah...Warhol had his own distinct style though, one which has been endlessly parodied ever since.

no, that's what they want you to believe

that's a bad shorthand of what warhol did

art IS maths
As wrong as it was to do,
Those eyes were made to look into.
