National Library of Scotland Digital Archive

Post by frogblast » Thu Jan 22, 2009 08:02

The National Library of Scotland are working on a new digital archive thingy. It's not done yet, but they have some examples up including a big load of soviet posters, gutenburg bible images and loads of war photos. you can download them as huge jpeg files (most seem to be over 7mb each).

this ability to download high res versions of stuff is why i've been waiting for the site to come online - they have all sorts of amazing old maps i want to download, instead of having to use the tiny 600*800 viewer on their existing website or having to go in and request copies on cd.

That's fantastic! It's rare for digital archives to have high-res files available to the public like that. Thanks for posting this!

this looks like it's going to be brilliant when it's all up and running. i think i'll stick a couple of these on a memory stick and take them down the print shop.

(I've got a 3 year library card, there, so I'm going and finger some manuscripts)

the site was broken yesterday and it looks like they've rolled it back to the older version without the links to the full rez images.

you can still download them if you know the url. e.g. the soviet posters are at http://digital.nls.uk/resources/2/74426110.jpg to http://digital.nls.uk/resources/2/74426153.jpg

e.g., just change the '/3/' to a '/2/' in the url of the medium sized ones

heh, lowly undergraduates like me don't get access. except to the NLS Map Library which is run by lovely people who want the public to have access to the stuff, unlike the elitist bastards at the main NLS.
