'Scared To Get Happy' indiepop CD launch gig Sat 22 June LDN

Post by otterpond » Sat Feb 16, 2013 15:33

Hello.
Surprised to see there wasn't already a thread relating to this gig (although Tim did mention it on the thread about the CD-boxset) , so I thought I'd start one.

https://agmp.ticketabc.com/events/scared-get-happy-fea/

Line-up currently features :
The Primitives
BMX Bandits
The Pooh Sticks
Brilliant Corners
The June Brides
Popguns
Mighty Mighty
14 Iced Bears
The Wolfhounds
+ more

I'm pretty excited by this, seeing as most of these bands were at their peak before I'd started getting properly into 'indie' (1989-90ish). And some of my favourite gigs ever were seeing The Popguns in the early 1990s in various dingy London venues, so I'm delighted to see them appearing.

So is anyone going? :)

20-25 years ago I'd have bitten you're arm off for this line-up but now... the chance to see t'wolfhounds and yeah yeah noh at this year's odd box weekender = exciting! the opportunity to see the june brides and the 14 iced bears at last year's indietracks also smashing... a whole day of nostaljacking off, not really my cup of tea, ta!

It all just seems a little unnecessary and reminds me of the indiepop version those dreadful 'Super 70's Extravaganza with Sister Sledge (one of the original backing singers), Mud (original drummer and Les Gray's nephew), Brotherhood of Man (the bloke with the 'tache and the blonde with the watery eye), Sweet (original bass player now out of jail) and Boney M (one of the original trio of singers and the mad bloke wearing Tena-pants).

I want my indiepop to be fizzing with urgency and vigour, full of spunk, and as exciting as fuck. A lot of the bands on the bill were doing just that at the time, but the idea of seeing them all now makes me feel sad and old and podgy, and brings to mind the smell of stale beer, the bitter disappointment of failed dreams, and the melancholy emotions of peering back at a glorious, bright, wild summer from the dark, cold, bleakness of winter... s'probably just me though.

the lp the bmx bandits put out last year is possibly one of the best long players duglas and co have ever put out- a beautiful thing that couldn't have been made when they were younger, an album born of experience and loss and hardwon wisdom and a lifetime of discovery and adventure... it really is rather special

but, yeh, I feel much the same as murray... why not have loads of launches around the country on the same day instead? with two bands from yore and one or two from today, that would be pretty fucking ace, pretty sweet... more of an event, less of a saga sponsored knees up for people who shouldn't really be getting their knees up

but, no it's all that london and as many bands as they can find of a certain vintage... I suppose it was all fields back then and what fields they were, big lush verdant lovely fields you could get lost in, not like today's fields which are all grey and made of concrete and full of cowering men of a certain age hiding behind bollards wishing they were back in those fields... the fields from before... the lovely rolling fields of before now

etc.

I'll probably go - but I'd prefer (see Odd Box Weekender) a few older bands and slew of newer bands.

I've seen The Popguns, The Pooh Sticks and The June Brides play fantastic shows in the last few years, that were anything but faded and knackered, so I'm quite excited by this. And that new Wolfhounds single is excellent too (as was The June Brides single last year)...

Agree that I've seen Wolfhounds, The Primitives, Pooh Sticks and June Brides do great shows recently.

I still think it's a little too nostalgia filled when every band is of that vintage. The crowd that go are invariably people that saw them first time around or at least 35+ - I like things to be mixed up. Some great fresh bands alongside some of the older guard so people get a chance to get excited by something they didn't know before (like kids getting into the old bands and the older folks getting into something new).

I agree with you, Trev. I'm glad every show isn't like this. And when I put on the Pooh Sticks and the Popguns, I made sure we had current supports rather than bands of a similar vintage. But I still think this gig will be fun. As a one-off it's fine I reckon.

I'm still interested but I'm afraid of ridiculously short sets. Am I right ?

not necessarily super-short sets as the ten bands are playing in two rooms, presumably five in each room, but above and beyond scheduling isses (i.e. not being able to see all of every band's set), if tickets sell well, moving back and forth might prove difficult as while one of the rooms has a capacity of 620, the other holds only 140.

I think some of you take these things a bit too seriously. It would be pretty grim if the entire indiepop 'scene' consisted of shows by reformed bands from the '80s but this is a one-off for a boxset that only covers music from that era so new bands on the bill makes no sense. Nostalgia shouldn't be a dirty word if it's only something you dabble in when the time is right.

No, but it's not as good as it used to be.

Sorry. I couldn't resist. I tried. Not very hard but I did try.

Hmm - I would have expected these bands to have played one after each other. 2pm-11pm. 30-40 minute sets, 15 mins break. Could have been feasible, couldn't it?

Still looks well worth attending, and should be a good day.

I also have a bit of a nostalgia threshold - but as Tim mentioned, this is a one-off launch for the album box set - so shouldn't have had more recent bands really.

why?

I'm late but: two different rooms. In the end it was a great night but I wish I could have seen full gigs.
