New Bands in Barcelona/Spain worth a listen

Post by dani_canto » Thu Jul 22, 2010 6:10 pm

(Chapter 1)

Hi everyone,

I should consider this my second post (on my first I was asking for help with Liverpool) but I think I cannot wait to give you a list of new bands you should be hearing in the inmediate future as they're some of the best bands in this country. All 100% Underground I guarantee.

Fred i Son http://www.myspace.com/sonifred They just released their new album 'Diu que no sap que vol' (He says he doesn't know what he wants') and is a perfect pop gem in the key of the Lucksmiths, Milky Wimpshake, June Brides, Family or La Buena Vida to name a few. It is in Catalan so you won't understand a thing, but this is maybe one of the best albums released this year in Spain. I swear

¡Pelea! http://www.myspace.com/peleapeleapelea The name means Fight and there's no need to be more frank about the concept. Punk pop with a mix of rockabilly and garage with a great live performance (last time I saw them they made a whole venue sweat to death). They've just released a Cassette and it's crazy. Check it Out!

The Mittens/Wild Honey http://www.myspace.com/mittensmittens / http://www.myspace.com/wildhoneysongs This is a Double Pack coming from Madrid. They share members and one head over all: Guillermo Farré, who is the one of the most interesting producers right now. As a Bucharach and Bubblegum Pop freak both groups have the spirit of a Jens Lekman-Clientele-Zombies and a mash-up of references of girl bands from the 70's-90's. Every detail will make your heart squeeze.

Aias http://www.myspace.com/lasaias Girl band, mistakenly under the spot of bands as Best Coast, Dum Dum-Vivian Girls just because they released under the Captured Tracks Label (NY). But dig a little on the details (words are on catalan) and you will find them sometimes closer to Talulah Gosh-Shop Assistants-Lung Leg-AGSFB. Sweet girl band with layers and layers of feedback and noise.

Papa Topo http://www.myspace.com/papatopo If you know anything about Spain that should be overall the Elefant Label. More than a decade releasing the best pop gems in these country they just made it again. Papa Topo are a couple not even in their twenties fans of twee, bubblegum bands as La Casa Azul-Helen Love-Fitness Forever. What else do you need? Start dancing to lolly-pop

Well, consider this the first chapter of a long serie of New Spanish Bands i consider I should shout their names to you all know their names and sing their tunes. I'll wait for your replys and opinions to keep filling the list, Spain is quite interesting right now and it's not because of the fucking football team.

Long live the Underground!

Cheers,

Dani

Do they have albums/songs that we can listen to? Is there one offshore? We'd love to listen to these kinds of music too. :)

Aias are great and I liked that last single from Papa Topo. Just heard Guatafán too. Impressive.
