The Netherlands

Possibly I could narrow this down to Amsterdam, as that is what Holland is to most people, no?

Come visit, all you Anorak people. We're friendly, most of us!

What's the difference between Holland and The Netherlands? Someone once told me that Holland was part of The Netherlands. If so what other "states" make up the Netherlands? Confused from the East End of London!

I have been in the country for about 35 minutes when passing through. Will deffo visit one day!

The Kingdom of the Netherlands consists currently of The Netherlands, The Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.
The Netherlands consists of 12 states (provincies):

Holland is the part in the west: Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland combined.

35 minutes though? Only Schiphol Airport or something? Same for me and England. I've been there three times officially, but all I've seen is Heathrow and Gatwick and London from the sky.

The Netherlands is not a federal country though, in the way Germany and the US are. They were during the 17th and 18th century, when Holland (North and South Holland were one 'state' at that time) was by far the most important state and for some reason many foreigners have been referring to the country as Holland ever since. (And using the plural The Netherlands - in Dutch it is just singular.) Some Dutch people, especially those from Holland itself, do so too though. And it makes for better football chants I think.

That's the thing, Holland is the most densely populated part of the Netherlands, so you're most likely to meet someone from that area. I lived in Zeeland most of my life (not living there anymore, thankfully) and nobody from Zeeland would ever say they are from Holland. Chanting at a football match they do use "holland", thenagain all is fair in love and football...

Actually, people outside Holland proper --especially in the more remote parts of the country (which, given its size, is all relative of course)-- generally refer to the west as Holland.

Anyway, welcome/welkom! I'm still in a state of shock to have found six compatriots (half of whom were children) at Indietracks! Dutch indiepop scene must be booming.

Haha, I was discussing with lapjeskat (gee, that sounds strange Linn!) in what a sad state the Dutch music scene in general is, and indiepop especially. Not one decent show coming up in the next 5 months or so. It's been ages (months) since I've been to a concert as well.

(The Cuties suddenly and shortly got an amazing amount of attention though.)

Shame they couldn't have been arsed about replying to my e-mails about putting them on in London though.

That's a bit strange! I know they've been quite busy for a short while touring with Claw Boys Claw (ew), but you'd think London would be an ace experience.

That's a bit of a shame really. I could get you in touch with the bloke who runs their label though. Let me know if you're still into that.

Ah yes, but ofcourse Zeeland doesn't quite belong to the west, nor does it belong to the south. Some parts are practically Belgium I guess. Perhaps it still can't get over the fact it's not technically made up of islands anymore...

But after a bit more of global warming, it will be again. :-)

(I'm from Hellevoetsluis, which isn't Zeeland only in name and is bound to end up within the extended North Sea again.)

(Tom, I've sent you a PM.)

The label just called it a day. I think it might be a better idea to send the band an e-mail again. I just did for an interview request and I got an answer within the hour.

From another topic:
annie wrote:yes, i am belgian. i just remembered reading an article relatively recently about how there are some disparaging terms and expressions in both french and english referring to the other nationality, dating back from a time when great britain and france weren't the best of friends. i wish i could remember where i saw it now! i can't think of any expressions used in belgium about dutch people, or vice versa, but i guess there probably are some. there are definitely many french jokes about belgians being stupid.
We Dutch have lots of them too. I used to have a few books with jokes about Belgians which, actually, is pretty insulting when I think of it. In general, the Dutch feel slightly patronizing about the Belgians but mostly they don't care; like most countries behaviour towards their smaller neightbour I suppose. I don't know any Dutch expressions about Belgium other than gebelgd ('Belgianed') which means angry/hurt. Well, I suppose that's what I would feel if I were Belgian and I went into a Dutch book shop to find aforementioned books.

It's a whole genre isn't it? Jokes about Belgians, I mean. Belgenmoppen. I have no idea how that started. It is pretty insulting indeed, although I don't believe any harm is meant. It's a bit like laughing at friends when they do something silly. Is is the language that sounds funny to 'us'?

Martijn, do you ever come back to the Netherlands during the year, or are you staying away as much as possible?
