"Will you be dining with us?"

It would seem unlikely

You don't often seen pissed landlords these days, do you? Unless you happen to drink at my Dad's pub.

I work down the road, give or take a bit, from the Black Boy. You should have said something.

So we're getting a new 1100 capacity venue in September, The Auditorium, in the old Odeon/bingo hall by the market.

It's being run by the people who brought back the Charlotte. Surely there aren't that many dub soundsystems and local synth-schmindie bands who'd fill a room that big.

Yeah. Closed a month ago and scaffolding literally went up the next day.

You might know this already, but the old Phoenix Arts building has been bought by Leicester College, the former Charlotte owner, the man who runs The Musician and the Magic Teapot promoters and is being eventually turned into a dual room venue called, erm, Upper Brown Street. That sounds more intriguing.

More directly, though, I'd like somewhere to put the Thursday evening Indietracks warm-up on as Firebug's now definitely booked. The Donkey on Welford Road's just quoted me more than I've ever taken on the door for one of my gigs just for room, sound and sundries.

The Donkey have got ideas above their station having hosted the New Beautiful South, wow.

What's that venue near the market? I'm struggling to picture where it is.

I'm excited about Upper Brown Street, when I first heard about that I thought it was one of the first vaguely sensible things anyone's done for music in Leicester for quite some time

I should maybe add that I've never had a lot of people through the door. Never broken twenty, in fact.

You'd know it was an ex-cinema when you see it. It's on what I always call the far side, that is to say the market approach nearest St Martin's Square rather than the side that leads onto Gallowtree Gate.

I'm sure they have a much better time than anyone at The New Beautiful South gig.

I've looked on Google Stalkview and can't track that place down. I'm genuinely perplexed - is it on the little street with Paper Tiger on it, or the perhaps the one with the indoor market entrance on that joins with Hotel Street? This probably makes NO SENSE

Ah, I've just seen a picture of it on Facebook, it's on the latter. Oh yes, I know it well, but never even noticed that it's an old cinema.

Pay attention, Pablo

Rather unexpectedly, I've been offered The Musician for the night for not very much at all, doubtless a lot less than they usually charge. I didn't even need to plead. Since you weren't about to ask: Mr Hibbett and his special friends, Standard Fare and one TBC.

July 22nd, hence its Indietracks warm-up status.

"It can only be a good thing."

Erm, if you like.

And just by pure coincidence, it's opening just as timelines are in place for two large independently run venues in the city. I like the university bloke's optimism when he's seemingly surprised that bands book Birmingham rather than Leicester.

This too: "Up-and-coming bands will play the 250-capacity 02 Academy. By the time they are NME cover stars and people are clamouring to hear them, they will have a strong fan base here and will want to play the city's bigger venues." Yeah, that's exactly what happens.

I thought the timing was odd, to say the least. I'd be amazed if this doesn't threaten either Upper Brown Street or the one in the Market Place or quite possibly both
