I'm from Romsey, and was born in Southampton. I guess technically I'm not famous though. Sigh!

Southampton - famous for...

The Joiners - great music venue (well it used to be!)
Barberellas - great wednedsay night indie disco..since demolished
Jane Pow - the only decent band to ever come out of the town...

I come from Romsey too! The only thing in Romsey these days is Waitrose, wicker shopping baskets and green barbours.........it really has gone down hill..

Modest - me? Surely not!

plus, I forgot to mention the legendary floating boat that was Riverside.... until it burnt down.

There's a bit of a theme running through here- most good things from Southampton simply aren't there anymore. Although I really like the Talking Heads as a venue - good beer, pleasant bar people and nice company!

Same goes for Southampton Footbal club - at the rate they're losing games will that be there next year?

i went to some good gigs at the joiners. no pop though. i tried to see fonda500 once but apparently it was cancelled and instead of telling anyone they just didn;t open the venue. nice.

i also once tried to go to a gig at the king alfred but it had apparently been moved to the joiners. bloomin eck.

There was a phase of indie pop at the joiners - I remember seeing the Popguns there twice (i think), the chesterfields, Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes, Heavenly, Brighter , Bob, and the Beatnik Filmstars just to name a few. Of course the Mayfields played there too! (that was the night the Close Lobsters didn't turn up cos there was footie on the telly!!)

I saw Hefner at the Joiners, which was pretty great. And At The Drive-In, which was interesting!

Has the quality of gig declined in recent years then? That's a shame, it always seemed like a decent venue.

Ah, I don't know - it has quite a few nice pubs, plus my parents / cat live there! I think it's quite a nice little place.

As well as the aforementioned, back in the day there was also THE JASMINE MINKS twice; THE WEDDING PRESENT; THE CHARLOTTES. I think THE POPGUNS might have played three times. HEAVENLY certainly did twice (once with BRATMOBILE). JANE POW played there a few times of course too.

Last couple of years has seen CAMERA OBSCURA; LOVE IS ALL; ABERFELDY & THE WEDDING PRESENT (twice).

Crikey, yes Betika are fantastic. I've seen them a few times just down the road in their native Bournemouth.

Have they got a second album on the way soon? I thought I read something about a year ago, or one of them may have mentioned it at a gig.
And by me, I mean, Flexo.
