Regarding No Pay-To-Play In Brum, I received an e-mail form Jay Mitchell of Surface Unsigned

Hi John, I’ve received emails today from bands who took part in the National Showcase claiming you are posting defamatory material about Surface Unsigned online and contacting them from your MySpace page http://www" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. myspace. com/nopaytoplayinbrum

Out of courtesy I thought I would let you know that I have received these complaints. At the moment these are just claims and I’ve not looked into it. As there have been claims of defamation I’ll be passing these complaints onto the relevant people.

Regards Jay Mitchell
Surface Unsigned Festival LTD
T: 0800 434 6076
E: jay@surfaceunsigned.co.uk
W: http://www.surfaceunsigned.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

After I replied peremptorially to his threat, he sent another saying that it doesn't matter because no-one is listening to me, but then he joined the Organ forum to praise Surface Unsigned

Nice to see I've had some effect

Hello Brum-oracks

Is anyone going to Robot vs Dinosaur this Friday. Suspect I'm going. Come!

Also - Ray! Are you back in brum soon. Have you booked a Christmas Twee Travelodge?
And by me, I mean, Flexo.

Everytime I try to use travelodge it comes up with this crappy embedded flash thing to confirm my card number which never works. I'll give them a call tomorrow. x

So long as you've forgiven me for the popfest then thats cool!

I should have mentioned also, we saw The Nightingales while in NY too! Hurrah for Brum.

In other news, we're having a headache just trying to find gigs in Brum which don't involve being reminded that we have to bring loads of people. It's a headache at the moment. Plan is to just get us and The Will to Rally and Shana Tova together for a free gig because gigs should be fun rather than commercial events etc.
And by me, I mean, Flexo.

They've done up The Vic behind the theatre. We popped in last night and it's looking really good. Best pub in the city centre. Confortable and not too loud. The upstairs could be a good gig venue too.

In other news, we went to Snobs too. I don't know why I'm into the habbit of texting Ray whenever I do, but there you go. There was a Smiths/Joy Division double header. Excitement.

Anyone go to Robot vs Dinosaur? Sorry about my no show.

looking forward to it, Dunc.
Hello you lot. I have been a bit distracted of late, with one thing and another.
Today, I have a horrible scabby virus thing. On the up side, time off work!

I wasn't too sure about the Victoria to be honest. I mean, its okay but....best pub in Birmingham city centre? I know there isn't much competition but surely we can do better than that?? And it cost EIGHT QUID for a beer and a glass of wine. I'm not sure if we were overcharged because my friend was shouting "what singer do you look like?!? I know, I know K.D. LANG!!!" at the barmaid.
I'm pretty sure she meant K.T. Tunstall.

Would be nice to see you lot, when my face is mended..

Hmm... I'd say K.D. Lang was good if you were going for that look. She'd make a fucking gorgeous man - but I don't suppose she would be greatly impressed by my saying that. If you're quite a feminine woman, on the other hand, being told you look like K.D. Lang probably isn't a huge compliment.

Annyway..
You can't come? Is it money, or just not being able to travel?

Stopped in the Victoria last week after we were accosted by a rather chirpy girl in the German market. Was quite impressed (if a little sorry to see chirpy girl wasn't there), laid back feeling and very friendly staff. Could do with a better selection of drinks though.

i'm supposed to do my last day at work the NEXT DAY. and so, yea, it's highly unlikely i'll be able to go. unless i leave early but i doubt that's on the cards either.

has anyone got a house i can have? or a job? i shoulda planned this more thoroughly.

also, i want some of this Vic action. i'm back the night before xmas twee if anyone fancies a pint?

She didn't look like KD Lang or KT Tunstall did she?

Agreed on the drinks! If the range was like Island it'd be better though I fear that would detract from the plain honest publiness of it all.

Also... westsiiied

Been...ahem...rediscovering certain areas of my life that had lain neglected whilst in a long relationship.. (you can fill in those gaps)
Also - well, I'm enjoying finally doing the sort of job I wanted, but am generally pretty knackered after getting back from Coventry, so the computer doesn't go on so much (and when it does... it tends to be different sites)

The face thing... Ooh, its not the best. The doc has given me some antibiotics, and told me to take my face home and hide it. So I am. Hopefully it will have cleared up soon though.

I'd like to see you all again soon - it will probably be Autumn Store now, I guess. But a drink before Christmas might be fun (Ray, what night is that that you're here?)

So - what have you lot done? I see Jeff Lewis is playing Bar Academy one night this week (tomorrow??) If I'm un-scabby enough, I might want to go to that.

hmm i read the face thing as being a direct consequence of the rediscovery of certain areas in your life and all manner of things went through my head. erm, i'll go away again...

(oh but yeah on the theme of westside i can't remember if i already knew or not that there was a southside too - they really did miss a trick there in not calling it south central instead)

ooh sorry, i just spotted there is an area called gun quarter too which i didn't realise before!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_j4oTVEZVKnM/S ... atial2.JPG

are they just being naive with all these gang related references to areas or is it some crazy marketing thing to develop birmingham as an edgy urban city! if it does create more gang related violence they only have themselves to blame...
