I really hope our first match of the season is televised... in Sweden. TV listings aren't out yet, but that would be really great.

How's everyone's pre-season going, then? Decent results?

Absolutely blazing. We've ruthlessly swept aside anyone that came at us with consumate ease. That'll be Mossley, Blackpool, Burnley, Fleetwood all sent home with their tails between their legs. And we lost to Barrow in the first one.

We'll probably do what we always do; have a bright start, even flirt with the play-offs in September. Then we'll start to lose a few before a fantastic win we never saw coming against fancied opposition in November, before going on a 18 game winless streak which plunges us down the table with the spectre of relegation looming. A handful of filthy 1-0 victories at the arse end of the season though will see us in the relatively calm end position of 16th. It's depressingly predicatble but I'll not take it for granted given what usually does happen once you slip into the bottom tier.

I'll not get to see a game until about October due to cricket season and then wedding/honeymoon. Coupled with my boss introducing 1 in 4 Saturday working, I'll probably see much less football than I usually do. I really ought to thank him. The cunt.

Our game against Bastard Franchise Scum at home is on the tellybox. Heaven knows why, like.
Fuck your tea room.

I'm really beginning to hate Five Live's footy coverage and programmes at the moment. Of course 606 is full of the kind of one-eyed goons who started liking football in 1998 - you expect that - but these twats like Mark Chapman and Robbie Savage are being paid shitloads to basically spout conjecture. It'd be really interesting to see how early they declare that Man Utd/Liverpool/Chelsea/Spurs/Man City/Arsenal/who-fucking-ever are out of the "title race" this year. I'm predicting Tuesday afternoon.

In other news, I saw a twenty-something bloke in Lincoln today wearing a crisp, brand new Man City strip. Including the socks. He was only putting petrol in his car.

IN LINCOLN.

Some things never change. I lived in Lincoln between 80-87 and no-one at my school supported Lincoln. It was all Liverpool and Manchester Utd fans, and me supporting Bradford...

But socks - a grown up???

Roberto Sauvage (as the peerless Stuart Hall dubs him) was evidently recognised with an award for his broadcasting last December from the Plain English Campaign.

I had no idea that "plain" is how one is meant to spell "inane" nowadays. I'll make a note.

Moreover, isn't his ascent up the broadcasting ranks a rather depressing example of cheats prospering? He'd already pundited on Five Live earlier in the week (giving his penneth on the Ian Bell run-out incident at Trent Bridge, of all things), bragging once again about his prowess as a diver and kidder of referees.

Taking that work-life model to its logical conclusion, I await with interest the unveiling of Nani as the next presenter of Newsnight.

Both of them hailed that match yesterday as THE BEST CHARITY SHIELD EVER.

Because they were both there, apparently...

Yeah, I heard that thing Savage was saying about cricket/diving. Pat Nevin made him sound like a right moron, didn't he?

If Saturday was a bright start, we might as well spread marmalade on our season already and call it breakfast.

"Owned", as I believe da kidz say nowadays.

And by indiepop's favourite footballer as well. When is Mr Nevin going to do a set at Butterly, one wonders?

What's most annoying about Cuntface Savage is that he quite clearly isn't a knuckle-dragging thicko, but he dumbs down to what he believes is the level expected of him, and tragically he appears to be right.

Bah, out of the Carling Cup at the first hurdle. Again.

But we have a bye in the Paint pot Trophy. We'll somehow knock ourselves out of that too.

Thank fuck for cricket.

I hate this week, when good football teams are playing proper games but we're still waiting for it all to start.

Didn't make much of an impact at Oldham. He was about 3rd or 4th choice when he was with us, came off the bench a few times and looked alright, physical but nothing special. No-one really cared much when Rochdale signed him, but he's been a revelation there in his two seasons. Of the two games I saw against us he was a right handful, and scored a couple against us at our place. I wouldn't say he's Championship material, but certainly decent for this level. He's quite similar to Leon Clarke, who we had on loan a few years ago (assuming you are a Wednesday fan, right?).

Yes. He didn't start when we played Rochdale at the weekend (apparently because of a mystery injury), but got heartily booed when he came on for the last 15 minutes or so. Seemed a bit harsh, considering.

He isn't really rated by any Rotherham fans I know, but it was a few years ago he was there. It won't take too much to be an improvement over Clinton or Madine.

Aye, two home games, two home defeats, and I read we were conspicuously dreadful on the first of those two games at least.

Lucky for me that I'll always have the cricket and the 'orses to amuse me as well as / instead of. Already clock-watching until the live feed from Edgbaston commences on Auntie Beeb's cricket website.
