It's a pleasure by public

Post by crystalball » Wed Dec 18, 2013 9:29 pm

You know when people on Twitter moan a lot about their fellow passengers and how they're having a bus journey from hell because a child is crying or singing loudly or whatever? I'm thinking of setting up an automatic reply which says something like, "However annoying the person sitting next to you might be, they are still not half as annoying as people who won't get on public transport because they think they're too good for it". Or, y'know, something intelligent and pithy. And then the other day I was reading this article about Brian Souter, the Stagecoach boss, a highly objectionable Tory who hates (among other things) public transport and passengers, and is now throwing massive hissy fits because in the North East, the councils have decided to control fares and routes in order to protect the public from, well, him.

So I'm thinking, no matter how annoying the person next to me might be, they are not Brian Souter. And we need to love public transport and everything about it because how else are we going to look after it? And we need to look after it, right?

I blame Christmas for this. It's making me emotional.

So tell me something good about using public transport. My thing is, on an average day I go on three or four buses, two tubes and one train and if I'm too tired to read or if I'm not sitting by the window, I'll secretly focus on someone and try and figure out their story.

Don't forget that he spent over a million pounds opposing the abolition of section 28. The man's an arse.

People who moan about public transport are frigging dullards. Oh, boo-hoo, your bus is two minutes late.

It's just a shame that it isn't really public transport any more. If it was, then they'd have a reason to moan.

On the way to Indietracks, a little girl peed over my bag. She PEED! Over my BAG. This was my first time in an English bus.

I don't know Brian Souter, but until a little girl pees over his bag, shush Brain.
All the little girls in England: you're free to read this as an invitation.

Incidentally, I was blathering on about 'The Tube' last night elsewhere on the internet. Do you think they select all their staff to be that awesome or do you think working on the tube makes you awesome? I think I might have missed my calling as a train driver, you know. I didn't realise that tube drivers tend to work pretty much exclusively on one line, either.

Yes! Well, yes to everything. What's lovely is, staff often treat their stations like you would if you were running a pub or something. It's their own space and they are free to do nice things with it: music, messages, a particular sense of humour - certain stations can make you happy and it's all down to staff.

I love that about the tube. Less corporate, more personal. Makes it feel like it's on your side.

Owning a car, I don't take public transport that often, but I've always enjoyed it. When I was a student here (up until Summer of last year), it was nice, because in Olympia students can ride the bus for free. While in bus rides I've taken there's an element of coldness, there is more often a feeling of camaraderie amongst strangers, and this always seems especially true riding as a freak amongst freaks on the Olympia busses.

From a non-Briton, what is 'the tube'?

Pitt students get to ride the bus for free here too. Actually all of public trans in Allegheny county is free, which is pretty dope. I wanna ride the incline up Mt. Washington and explore all over the place, once I get some downtime. I just moved here a week and a half ago.

Last night is -2(F) with dog knows how low of a wind chill. I was so cold I got on the wrong bus and then I had to wait another half hour.

Sorry Yex - that's the London Underground.
