Pointless

Post by Cloudy Cat » Wed Sep 12, 2012 18:01

I love this show despite the fact that the categories often return in slightly different forms. It's the chemistry between the two hosts that make it work. But when will someone pick Spanish Pop in the final round? I've got to know what the question is but I know it'll never get picked.

I'm sure they had that category once before and it turned out to be Julio Iglesias.
It is rather a great show for eating your dinner too though.

NO! I can't have missed it.

I thought the most likely question would be: name any Spanish artists who had a top 40 hit.

No, I think this was a completely different one, so you could in fact be correct.
I'm sure most of you will know this, but the best Pointless trivia is of course the fact that Richard Osman is the brother of Mat from Suede.

I have found pointless answers in the final round twice, and the categories were "Steps singles" and "Solo singles by members of the Spice Girls". Pretty cool, huh? Who wants to apply to go on with me?

I once got one when the topic was 'Simply Red top 40 singles'. Shame on me.

A friend dragged me along to an audition last year. We didn't get on because of, or maybe inspite of, him ending up answering the question of "Why would you like to go on the show?" with a description of a new gameshow he was making up on the spot which involved the Russian oliagarchy burning down people's houses.

I have to admit I was on the show with my wife about a year ago. We only got on because someone pulled out at the last minute and we happen to live a few miles from where they film it.

We won.

It was hardly a financial bonanza though as contestants on the previous show won. Though there was three pointless answers on the show which boosted the prize money.

The wife was fascinated by Richard Osman's hands. They were big.

I've got 2 as well - Bon Jovi singles and Bowie singles.

I'm sensing where Team Anorak's strengths lie.

We chose the category, countries.

We had to name three countries with a population of less than a million. We chose Vanuatu, Belize and Bhutan. The first scored one point, the latter two were pointless. My love of maps finally paid off.

That's a brilliant category! And good answers, too.

Thanks. I really thought Belize was a bit of a risky punt and thought the other two would be pointless.

One of the earlier rounds was pop music which we were very excited about but that was our worst round. We got through because there was an old guy who knew nothing about pop music and thought Brown Sugar was a Tina Turner song.

I don't remember an Iglesias question, and I have watched every single episode. *cough* I did think that "Top 40 hits by Julio and Enrique Iglesias" would be an obvious question for that category, though...

Was The Smiths round in the final or penultimate round? Anyway, I got 3 Pointlesses in that and my wife got 3 in the Blur final round too. (Actually, I kind of cheated with The Smiths one because I gave 4 answers rather than 3; 3 were pointless and my other choice (That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore) wasn't even mentioned. Is it classed as an EP?)

Even though the revamped set is nicer, I don't like the newer episodes of Pointless as much. I liked it how there were both pointless and wrong answers to pick from in Round 2 and don't think that the picture rounds work very well in round 3. In fact, having been slightly obsessed with the show for a year or two, I only watch it occasionally now. I've probably got Pointless burn out. Either that or my telly's too small. I still enjoy doing little dances to the sound when the total goes down or a wee hip thrust to a wrong answer 'booooww'. It's also good fun to make up lyrics to the theme tune.
"We're watching Pointless on the TV-ee
A go for you-oo
And then it's me-ee"

Today's final question was "bordered countries with population of less than a million". Belize was still pointless! If only the contestants had watched you win.

Yes I saw it. That was lazy on Richard Osman's part, if he picks the questions. It was a minimal change, taking islands out of the answers. Why not ask how many countries have a population of 50 million or more?

The answers they gave implied they'd watched the show but had no idea of geography. San Marino was the only correct answer. Sao Tome & Principe and possibly Vatican City have been pointless answers before. They probably remembered them but failed to apply them correctly.

Funnily enough we nearly picked Sao Tome & Principe and but for the editing you'd have seen us mention it to Richard then disregard it as we weren't sure it was a UN recognized country. Turned out to be pointless so we would have had three correct answers.

I noticed Bhutan was not pointless this time. I came up with these alternative three, Suriname, Montenegro and Guyana. All pointless. Thought of Qatar too but wasn't sure it was under a million. I'm a sad geographical geek.
