Re: The Football

Setanta's reporter outside Tottenham's training ground discussing Robbie Keane's possible cut-price return just referred to Liverpool's American owners as "George Gillet & Bill Hicks". Arf.

Re: The Football

and i wonder what the odds are on villa winning the league, people seem to be dismissing them and saying they'll fuck it up eventually, but united, liverpool and chelsea are all playing quite poorly right now compared to recent seasons... even though i'm a united fan i'd almost be happy to see vill...

Apparently. Even the, erm, mighty Colchester United were trying to snaffle him the other week.

Um, not football, but they play "My hometown" by The Wannadies every time Skellefteå (ice hockey) score... A bit OT, but I didn't start it! And, it's still a cracking tune. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7d3OK6RkjTQ It really is. Such a great band. The blog Pretending Life Is Like A Song (which,...

Re: The Football

And I can't help but feel sorry for that nice Tony Adams, despite (or probably because of) the fact that he's a bit loopy and utterly hapless/hopeless (delete as applicable). Yes - every time I see him interviewed, I want to give him a hug. I've been sort of cheering Portsmouth on for a few years a...

Re: The Football

I think I dislike Joe Kinnear more than Redknapp. They're pretty much exactly the same manager though. Are there any likeable Premiership managers? Even the best ones tediously moan on MOTD at every given opportunity. I think O'Neill, Southgate and Zola are the only ones worth being nice about. I q...

Re: TV Quick: talk about things on telly succinctly

Hey but did you see the score this week, and smuggy mcsmug the team captain? Oh yes, the smiling assassin. Christ, she knew her onions! I was longing for a few popular culture questions in there to throw the unrelenting Oxbridge toffs off the scent, but alas it wasn't to be. The semi-finals are goi...

Re: Mis-heard lyrics

The line "Take these broken wings" from Mr Mister's 1986 smasheroo Broken Wings famously sounds more like "Jake, he's broken wind". (Would have livened up the song no end if those actually were the lyrics.)

'Iris' by Finnish duo Burning Hearts, from their forthcoming album 'Aboa Sleeping' (which is utterly fantastic).

Re: Skins!

Oh, I know MSCL could lay on the angsty melodrama and naval-gazing a bit thick at times, but I think the casting, characterization and general atmosphere of that show was so spot-on that it would be hard to top in terms of all-round appeal. Having said all that, F&G does sound rather good from the ...

Re: Skins!

I love (and own) My So-Called Life, and while I do think it's great... seriously, Freaks & Geeks fill that whole genre with much more humour and warmth, I think, than My So-Called Life. It's a great show, of course, and it's lovely in terms of the vague quotes and thoughts and how teenage-y it is, ...

Re: what book are you reading?

I'm reading Snobs by Julian Fellowes at the moment. Only 50-odd pages in so far but am already enjoying it. Before that it was John O'Farrell's Utterly Impartial History of Britain (or 2000 Years of Upper Class Idiots in Charge) , and that was absolutely superb. As laugh-out-loud funny as it is educ...

Re: Skins!

I think the best show ever for feeling normal and good and happy with your teenage years is Freaks & Geeks. It's one of my favourite shows just because it's so awkward, the people in it are not clasically good-looking, they're all a bit weird (i.e. normal) and no one's cool. I've never seen Freaks ...

Did anyone else hear Adam & Joe riffing about the opening few minutes from episode 1 of the latest series of Skins a couple of weeks ago? Bloody hilarious it was.

Re: TV Quick: talk about things on telly succinctly

Yeah, didn't he say something like "the point of this show is to demonstrate your knowledge, and you clearly haven't got much". I'm paraphrasing, but that was the message in it. That Mentalblad guy or whatever he was called from the winning team was a bit annoying*. I didn't trust his eyebrows. *by...

Re: Prisoner Cell Block H

Nobody could scowl into a telephone whilst sighing in exasperation quite like Erica Davidson. And her hair like a helmet was legendary! My favourite character was Sandy Edwards (as immortalised in song by Action Biker) but the trio of Lizzie Birdsworth, Bea Smith and Doreen Anderson/Burns are also ...
